Dr. Nikhil Wagle is a physician, small business owner, and a dedicated public servant. As a resident of Bettendorf for 26 years, Dr. Wagle has served his community as a passionate and tireless advocate for both a strong public education system and increased healthcare access for all Iowans.
Dr. Wagle’s passion for public education stems from his own upbringing. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to first generation immigrant parents, Dr. Wagle is a product of Homestead High School, and then attended University of Wisconsin for both his undergraduate and medical school education. He attended Duke University to complete his ophthalmology training before moving to Bettendorf to begin his career. As a strong proponent of public schools, Dr. Wagle has served on the Pleasant Valley School Board for 12 years, including five as President, where he helped lead initiatives boosting student achievement and enrollment while demonstrating fiscal responsibility. During his tenure on the school board, Pleasant Valley has earned many academic and extracurricular accolades. Most recently, Pleasant Valley Schools ranked as the top public school district in Iowa, received the coveted national blue-ribbon award, and had a teacher at Pleasant Valley High School receive the prestigious Teacher of the Year award in 2022.
Dr. Wagle has served his community as an ophthalmologist for the last 26 years, restoring vision for over 25,000 patients. His interactions with patients allowed him to gain invaluable insight into the healthcare needs of Iowans. During this period, he ascended to the role of partner at his medical practice and took on the role of a small business owner. For his efforts, he was appointed to the Iowa Board of Medicine for three years, where he held the position of Secretary and worked to uphold the integrity of the medical profession and prioritized the safety and health of Iowans. His leadership is defined by collaboration, transparency, and a deep commitment to improving the health of all residents of the state.
Married for 30 years to his wife, also a physician, Dr. Wagle is the proud father of two sons—one a public-school teacher in Cedar Rapids, the other a dental student at the University of Iowa. In his free time, he likes to travel, exercise, listen to 80s music, and spend time with his friends and family.
Dr. Wagle brings a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing Iowa families. With over two and half decades of experience caring for patients and operating an independent, successful, group medical practice, he knows firsthand the importance of accessible, affordable health care and the current difficulties many Iowans are facing. He is also keenly aware of the critical role local businesses play in strengthening our economy. As a passionate advocate for public education, he believes it is essential to invest in Iowa’s communities to draw new families and businesses into our state.

I do not have children. Why should I care that vouchers are taking funding away from private schools?
Simply put, strong public schools form stronger communities. Quality education draws people into the area, opening up possibilities for new businesses and partnerships. Also, because these areas attract more newcomers, living in or near a district with a high-standard education also improves home values for residents.
When Nikhil called to tell me of his candidacy I responded with enthusiasm and support for his campaign… my husband… asked me what political party he is associated with. I responded I didn’t know nor did I care. Nikhil is kind, smart, & level-headed. He’s a critical thinker and a clear leader. He’s exactly what a politician should be.
